Tested it today - seems to charge and work as stated. No manual so one click to turn on power, two clicks to shut off and a long hold of the button will turn on the LED light. Took off one Quality star for lack of instructions.

Q: batteries can be of the unprotected type?

Dennis The text states that it has over current / voltage protection... So I would imagine the protection circuitry is built in (as in most).
