JazzXP Yes.The adapter beyond just giving you a nice adapter for different balance plugs gives some smoothing, but it's not required for use.

BangGoodness Dependa on the devices and what power they require. Your typical USB charger will be 5v 0.5 to 2.5A. Many hard drive will require power to run. The 5V in gives these devices the power. If you are connecting a powered device like your phone or a printer or a camera ... then that device provides enough power to run and connect to your computer.
