The pin and o-ring is used to fit this to machines that come with a hole through the half inch square, so you can stick the pin through it, and use the o-ring to secure the pin. If your machine doesn't have that type of locking mechanism, there is a groove inside the half inch square bit, that works with machines that have a c-clip for retaining tools andor bits
