jacksure thanks. its a nice library and that change made it work. that header is in MD_MAX72XX lib, in my (linux) system at ~/Arduino/libraries/MD_MAX72XX/src/MD_MAX72xx.h . also remember to use the right pins if using hw spi. in UNO 11 MOSI for DIN, 13 SCK for CLK and for example 10 for CS (You can also find MOSI, SCK, VCC and GND from ICSP connector in standard pins (not CS), otherwise it depends of your arduino model)
