As I have found with several similar Wemos units, the USB connection does not provide a comm port. In order to flash the unit, one must connect an external USB to serial converter. On this unit, TX is labeled D10 and RX is D9. To flash the unit, turn the unit on while holding the joystick button to the Left. The serial port wii then report (at 74880 baud): ets Jan 8 2013,rst cause:2, boot mode:(1,6) When you are in flash mode, you can save the current app: allen@laptop3:~/ssd1306$ esptool.py --port /dev/ttyUSB0 --baud 74880 read_flash 0 0x100000 ESP8266_18650_Battery_0.96.bin esptool.py v2.3.1 Connecting.... TimLee Afterupdating with CP210x driver, the USB connection does work. It's not necessary to use an external USB to serial, but it does use a different one to the usual Wemos D1.
