Agafum It'sa useful test signal for a bunch of stuff. Say you are testing an amplifier you just built, but you don't have access to the real source, this allows you to check that AC is passing. It also let's you check things like distortion and high piss filtering, by comparing the input signal to the output. It also let's you check calibration of equipment, ie checking slew or impedance. But mostly it's just a sanity check. 'am I actually getting signal through this line's.
