If you use AA alkaline cells with the Uv-5R you must use a dummy (shunt) cell in place of one of the six cells or the radio will have too much voltage and not transmit. I run the radio for 5 or 6 hours then put in the one cell of the six you left out to put in the dummy cell and then you can use the radio until they are completely depleted. If you try to run it on five AA alkaline cells the radio will die after having used only half the capacity of the cells. This shell case will require trimming if used on the UV-5R variants that are not the original "square" case. Some choose to modify the radio rather than the battery however.
